The shell gets most of the attention when a pool project begins. The details around it shape how the space feels every day: the edge where you sit, the path back to the house, the equipment you need to reach and where water goes after a downpour. If you began collecting ideas in 2025 and are moving towards an installation in 2026, now is the time to turn that inspiration into a coordinated finish and a clear scope.
Choose a direction before choosing every product
Start with the materials already at your home. Look at the exterior paint, patio surface, fencing and garden rather than selecting everything from isolated photographs. A light neutral surround with a blue shell can be one direction; warmer stone tones and green planting can be another. Treat those as design ideas to explore, not prescribed combinations.
Our finish selection gives you a starting point, including shell colours such as Pacific Shimmer and Silver Shimmer. Request physical samples and completed-pool examples where available, and review them beside your proposed coping. Screen previews are an aid to choosing, not a promise of the exact finished appearance. Confirm current colours and availability when the project is quoted.
Look closely at the edge you will touch
Coping is the material that finishes the pool edge. Ask to see its profile as well as its surface: a bullnose, square edge or drop face creates a different detail. For example, The Pool Tile Company offers Ash Marblano coping in several profiles and flags some sizes as non-stock items. A material name alone does not specify the product you will receive.
Discuss wet-area suitability, the exact slip-test information, cleaning requirements and the proposed installation method with the supplier and installer. Ask how the material feels underfoot in the conditions you expect, and whether sealing or particular cleaners are required. Put the selected product, profile, size and finish into the written scope so an attractive sample becomes an unambiguous order.
Make a plan for water outside the swimming area
Ask the project team to show how finished levels, paving and garden areas will work together. Discuss where rainfall arriving from the rest of the property will go, and how that differs from managing water discharged from the pool. These are questions to resolve in the design, before surrounding works are complete.
Townsville City Council's residential pool guidance says overflow and maintenance water must not enter stormwater drains, and sets conditions for managing backwash and other discharges. Have the team confirm the appropriate arrangement for your property and check the relevant council if you live elsewhere. Avoid assuming that a nearby street gutter is an acceptable destination.
Read the quote as a picture of the finished job
QBCC recommends confirming the work covered by the price, including whether fencing, surrounds and landscaping are included. Use that as the starting point for a practical conversation. Elite Pools NQ can coordinate associated finishing works and contractors, but your agreed scope determines which parts of your project are included.
Ask who is supplying each item, who is installing it and what remains for you to arrange. Check the less visible details too: removal of excess material, reinstatement of access areas, equipment access and final cleaning. If you want to stage the landscaping later, discuss what must be completed now and how future work will connect.
Include the first months of ownership
A useful handover should leave you comfortable asking ordinary questions. Request a demonstration of the installed equipment, the manufacturer's care instructions and a clear contact for follow-up. Keep the product details and warranty documents together so future servicing starts with accurate information.
Our pool care services can support the next chapter, with routine maintenance, equipment assistance and holiday care. Discuss the service area and a schedule that suits your pool. The goal is an outdoor space you enjoy using, with a care routine you understand from the beginning.
